The organizers of Family Promise, a group hoping to organize a network of homeless shelters among area churches by this fall, will get a helping hand from a group of local women Thursday.

Nearly all of the local chapters of the Red Hat Society are sponsoring a Chinese auction to benefit Family Promise starting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the American Legion Building in Lancaster.

"We really believe in this," said Darlene Hallman, a member of Lancaster's Ramblin' Red Hatters. "This is only the second fundraiser they (Family Promise) have had."

Hallman's church, Zion United Methodist Church, is one of eight host churches signed up to provide temporary shelter to homeless families through the local chapter of Family Promise, which recently received its tax-exempt charter.

Hallman wanted to help Family Promise raise money, so she suggested the idea of a fundraiser to her Red Hat Society chapter.

Her group accepted the project and then other clubs got on board until nine local Red Hat chapters were involved.

"We're really excited about it," Hallman said. "We've never done anything like this before."

Admission to the Chinese auction will be $5.

For that, you'll get 25 tickets to drop in baskets in front of the auction items you'd like to win.

You'll also get a chance to win door prizes donated by local businesses with the tickets.

Your admission tickets also get you a sandwich and beverage.

Additional sets of 25 tickets can be bought for $5. There is no limit on the number of tickets you can buy to try to win auction items.

Soft drinks and baked goods, including more than 20 cakes, will be for sale.

All proceeds will go to Family Promise.

Bill Hutchinson, chief organizer of the local Family Promise chapter, appreciates the help from the Red Hat clubs.

"It's great," he said. "We love for people who feel strongly enough about this ministry to help out."

Family Promise plans to do more fundraising and is hoping to find at least five more churches willing to agree to be host churches in the shelter network.

Welcome to Family Promise of Lancaster, SC Minimize

Our mission is to help low-income families in Lancaster County South Carolina achieve lasting independence and to redress the underlying causes of poverty and homelessness.

Family Promise was founded on the belief that Americans are compassionate people who want to make a difference. Our promise has been to link those in need with those who want to help. Seventeen years and 110,000 volunteers later, our pledge is ever broader and deeper.

We work to accomplish our mission through four program areas:

Interfaith Hospitality Networks (IHNs) provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services to homeless families.

Family Mentoring helps prevent homelessness by training volunteers to be advisors and advocates to low-income families.

Just Neighbors, an interactive educational program, raises awareness of the root causes of poverty and homelessness as the first step in establishing community-based responses.

Community Initiatives foster local IHN outgrowth programs, such as transitional housing, job training, childcare, and literacy.
