Family Promise of Lancaster County started in September 2007. The essential backbone of any organized group is to have committees to collect needed information or recruit volunteer help.

Family Promise is no different. The committees and their chairmen are: Host Recruitment Committee, the Rev. Dan Batson of First United Methodist Church, chairman: Fundraising Committee, Calvin Miller of Covenant Baptist Church, chairman: Public Relations, Mary Atkinson of St. Catherine Catholic Church, chairwoman and the Day Center with Chad Catledge of First Baptist Church as chairman.

Six churches have committed to be host churches after listening to the Interfaith Hospitality Network/Family Promise representatives and talking it over with their congregation. The churches are Covenant Baptist, First United Methodist, First Presbyterain, St. Catherine Catholic, First Baptist and Grace United Methodist.

Coreen Khoury of Folks, Khoury & DeVenney, LLC Law Firm and a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, has volunteered her services to Family Promise of Lancaster County.

Doug Burnette, public accountant and member of Covenant Baptist Church, has volunteered his services also.

Claudette Burke, a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, is the newest member to volunteer to be on the board of trustees.

The other board members are Batson, Harriet Myers and Bill Hutchinson from First United Methodist Church; Marita Eden of First Presbyterain Church; Glenn Steen and Dr. Roy Still from First Baptist Church; Dr. Lee Thomas, Calvin Miller and the Rev. Dr. Bert Welch from Covenant Baptist Church.

The University of South Carolina at Lancaster students are excited about volunteering and doing what they can to help get the day center up and running.

The day center, the core of helping the families effort, will be located at the old Jo’s Day Care at 304 E. Arch St.

A tremendous amount of progress has been made, although we still need quite a few more churches. The time line has moved up. We will need to start raising money for Family Promise of Lancaster County.

Please keep us in mind when thinking of another helpful cause you can donate to.

Family Promise of Lancaster County, S.C. “Helping Families Without Homes” would like to thank you ahead of time for your support and patience.

Please pray for us as we continue on this journey.

You are invited to come to the next Family Promise Core meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at First Presbyterian Church on Main Street.

Welcome to Family Promise of Lancaster, SC Minimize

Our mission is to help low-income families in Lancaster County South Carolina achieve lasting independence and to redress the underlying causes of poverty and homelessness.

Family Promise was founded on the belief that Americans are compassionate people who want to make a difference. Our promise has been to link those in need with those who want to help. Seventeen years and 110,000 volunteers later, our pledge is ever broader and deeper.

We work to accomplish our mission through four program areas:

Interfaith Hospitality Networks (IHNs) provide shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services to homeless families.

Family Mentoring helps prevent homelessness by training volunteers to be advisors and advocates to low-income families.

Just Neighbors, an interactive educational program, raises awareness of the root causes of poverty and homelessness as the first step in establishing community-based responses.

Community Initiatives foster local IHN outgrowth programs, such as transitional housing, job training, childcare, and literacy.
